The Art of the Possible in Practise: Penguins, plots and… cake (24.07.2019)

The atypical beachside village of St.Kilda in Melbourne has always been within my memory (I briefly lived there as a teenager before leaving Australia) a contrasting cross-section of grinding poverty and wealthy alternative lifestyles.

... veg-out...

Acland Street, long a cake mecca, is now also interspersed with vegan and vegetarian outfits, which are hugely popular across the Melbourne CBD, but the facades still hide the poverty in too many alleyways. The dark side of the devastating heroin epidemic that continues in Melbourne, is now literally fully out in the open on the main street, in nearby North Richmond.

If you take a winding boardwalk in St. Kilda past Luna Park (which thinking about it now, does look remarkably like a politicians mouth) the sea side path takes you to a small penguin colony hidden away at the end of the pier.

.... public space provided by the people for the people...

A short tram journey makes it easy for anyone living in the nearby city where apartment living is the new norm, to take a walk in the soft and soothing sand. I even saw two brave women taking a dip in the winter water, which was keen.

The Salvos shops in the City and surrounds are so well stocked, it is possible to purchase an amazing wardrobe, which helps re-cycling, although the prices at mass market K-mart can be comparable.

A centre-piece of the social scene in St.Kilda however that sets it apart is a well developed vegetable plot of inspiring magnificence, that puts the art of the possible into practice. The plots are accompanied by a number of artists studios alongside to continue to grow the creative theme.
