ISRAEL : EUROPEAN ASHKENAZI & MEDITERRANEAN SEPHARDI CONTINUE TO DIFFER OVER INDEPENDENCE DAY & HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL (18.04.2018)
... donna and david...
European Ashkenazi do not have the same shared history of the centuries of 'persecution' etc of Sephardi from all around the Mediterranean that culminated in the Holocaust.
Even today Sephardi are seriously under-represented in public life in Europe and Israel because European and Arab governments still don’t like Mediterranean Sephardi, with conversos obviously having the most problems, still facing so much discrimination.
There’s unsurprisingly not many Sephardi who live in the UK by choice, that’s for sure, and with good reason, including because the Edicts of Expulsion that were never repealed were against Sephardi. Interestingly there are way more Ashkenazis in the United States than in Israel.
